Gargaar Relief and Development Organization (GREDO) has begun to implement risk communication activities in Baidoa and other areas of Southwest State of Somalia (SWS) in order to raise public awareness on the risks of the deadly Coronavirus and prevent its spread amongst the communities such as the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and returnees.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus. The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. It spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth (WHO, 2020).
GREDO implements health and nutrition programme in the regions of Southwest State of Somalia (SWS) in collaboration with several partners and runs 24 health and nutrition centers where it reaches the vulnerable community members including the IDPs with health and nutrition services. It has over 200 health and nutrition workers across the regions of South West of Somalia to serve for the affected population.
In its COVD-19 response activities, GREDO carried out public awareness campaigns on COVID-19 prevention and demonstrations of handwashing practices.
GREDO health teams visited the Towfiiq, Hanano 2 and Salamay Idale health centres where they have spoken with the patients receiving medical assistance and demonstrated handwashing practices.
GREDO installed handwashing stations at these sites so that people can have access to handwashing facilities amid the Coronavirus crises.
It has also delivered soap to the different sites and placed at the handwashing stations for use by the IDPs and other target populations.
